What is Alter Aeon?
If you already have a mud client that you're happy with, the Alter Aeon
address is alteraeon.com, port 3010.
Alter Aeon is one of the most blind friendly multiplayer games on the web. Over
half of our players are blind or visually impaired, and our dedicated staff is
constantly on the lookout for trouble spots.
Alter Aeon is a type of game called a MUD, which is by default a text based
game playable with screen readers. However, because MUDs are multiplayer and
run in real time, it takes extra work to make a truly blind friendly mud.
The resources below include both downloads we host, as well as downloads and help
from the large community of blind Alter Aeon players. Hopefully one of the
clients listed below will work well with your computer and screen reader software.
We hope to see you soon on Alter Aeon!
Clients, Scripts, and Help
One of the major difficulties is that different screen readers, and even different
versions of the same screen reader, generally do not work the same. There are
several different types of clients you can use to connect to Alter Aeon (or other
muds), but finding one that works well with your reader can be hard.
Some of our best support for the blind and visually impaired has come from
our blind players. Here are links to some of our blind community sites,
which host and maintain scripts and downloads.
-
The player Zhiun has put together an excellent
Mushclient distribution,
including sound files and interface files for screen readers. This client
is used by a number of blind Alter Aeon players. You can download and install it
from this link:
Mushclient
Scripts and Installer
(Note - this is a 60 MB Windows only download.)
- VIPMud users - you can download Dime's
VIPMud Soundpack for Alter Aeon
from our downloads area.
- Here is the support page for
MonkeyTerm,
one of the most commonly used clients for blind players. This page includes downloads and
custom scripting by blind players, for blind players. Maintained by the player
Mathayas.
- Here is the support page for
GMud,
a compact and effective client that works well with some readers.
- The Alter Aeon clan 'Knights of Saint Christopher' has a page with
installation
instructions and downloads for GMud, scripts for JAWS, and sound packs.
- This site also has some general information about Alter Aeon and tips on
how to play at this
page.
Direct Client Downloads
The custom clients we recommend for sighted players do not yet have good
support for screen readers. We are working to improve support, but
for now you might want to try our versions of the basic screen-reader
compatible clients:
GMud (Windows)
For this client to work well with your reader, you need to
download and install scripts for it. You can download the
JAWS scripts from
our server.
Mushclient
Installer (Windows, 60 MB)
This Mushclient release contains scripts for Alter Aeon. This includes
scripts and setup for both JAWS as well as Window Eyes, and includes a full set of
custom aliases and triggers as well as an audio library plugin for playing the
sound triggers. Instructions are included.
VIPMud and the
Alter Aeon VIPMud Soundpack
VIPMUD is a commecial client designed
for the blind and visually impaired. We have received good reviews for this
client from our blind community. You can use it for a 30 day trial period,
but after the trial expires some of the features are disabled.
MonkeyTerm (Windows)
MonkeyTerm is a GNU GPL'ed client that a number of Alter Aeon players
use. It has support for nearly any feature, and a number of blind players
use it because it's easy to script and filter. You can also obtain it
from our server. We host a local mirror of the
Windows executable
and the
GPL'ed
source code.
GMud (Windows)
This is a set of GMud JAWS scripts used by the god Morpheus. It may not be
suitable for all players.
We are open for submissions of scripts and new clients. Please contact Dentin
in-game if you would like to add a client to this page.
Other Blind and Visually Impaired Sites
For blind and visually impaired players, our friends at
e-bility
have a list of other games besides Alter Aeon that are blind-friendly,
including board games and puzzles.
The
gutterstar.net web site has a number
of other downloads for the visually impaired which may be useful. You will need
to log in to download anything.
