New Alter Aeon Client Release 0.985

I'm pleased to announce the latest version of the Alter Aeon client.  You can get it at:

The primary additions to this version are a new player demo mode, and improvements to the automap.  Here's the detailed changelog:

- Split newbie buttons into hint and direction buttons with separate toggles.

- Add newbie demo mode support.

- Add direction clicking and mouseover to automap.

- The 'clear scrollback' function has been moved to the 'file' menu.

- Support for 'locking scrollback' added.

- Main window sidebar width is now a fixed value when automap is undocked.

- Control-M now toggles automap, Control-A selects text from the input window.

As always, report bugs if you find them!

A few things I have noted (running on Windows 98 Second Edition - yes, my computer is that old).

Some preferences do not save - in particular the layout option (I prefer embedded), the display of function key and direction buttons, and the "Select Last Command" option.

Also, what determines just now much of the mapping information is "remembered"?

It sounds like the config file directory probably doesn't exist, or can't be created.  Normally, it tries to create something over in application data, but I don't know where that ends up on your system.  I'll see if I can find a way to turn on debug logging for windows builds so we can see what's up, but that probably won't be in until the next release.

Oh yeah, the mapping data is stored on your pfile server side.  It's just a finite number of rooms, because storing every single room you've been in on the game would be space prohibitive.
